Atlantic City Surf Stadium: Here’s What It Looks Like Now [Photos]
Yesterday, we sent Don Hurley, his keen eye and steady hand to photograph Atlantic City Surf Stadium as it looks today. I was surprised by his photographs.
Initially Called Sandcastle Stadium
It initially opened in 1998 as Sandcastle Stadium. The Atlantic City Surf played in the Atlantic League of Professional baseball.
The Atlantic League is still going strong decades later under the direction of the legendary Frank Boulton.
It Is Now Called Surf Stadium
In April, 2012, it officially became “Surf Stadium.”
The Condition Of Surf Stadium Today
The photos that I am sharing with you here were taken yesterday by Don Hurley.
I was expecting the stadium to be in bad shape. The exact opposite is true. Surf Stadium is presently in excellent condition.
Ethan Coursey and his team have done a great job.
The only things missing are a working scoreboard and lights for night baseball. Both are very big ticket items.
Many years ago, a new scoreboard would have cost $500,000.
The field conditions and seating areas are in excellent condition today. See for yourself (below):
Vai Sikahema & Jose Canseco Boxing Match
The fight was called the “War At The Shore" and it took place on July 12, 2008 at Surf Stadium.
Canseco challenged Sikahema, a former NFL Ppayer and Philadelphia sports television anchor.
Canseco talked a big game, but, in the end, Sikahema demolished Canseco in 1 round.
Don Hurley and his camera were on hand. See below.
Great Talent Played In The Atlantic League
Here are just two examples, Rubin Sierra and Ricky Henderson:
The Atlantic League has countless examples of Major League Baseball players, who played there and returned back to Major League Baseball.
The City of Atlantic City should put the younger Coursey (Ethan) in charge of other areas that need fixing. He has done a great job at Surf Stadium.
