The Atlantic County Democratic Committee held its 47th Annual Atlantic County Democratic Convention, on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at the Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point.

The officially endorsed candidates by the Atlantic County Democrats are:

  • Tim Alexander - United States Congress, District 2.
  • Ernest Coursey - Atlantic County Commissioner, District 1.
  • Jay Shah - Atlantic County Commissioner, District 4.
  • Habib Rehman - Atlantic County Commissioner-at-Large.

Coursey is presently the only Democrat incumbent that is running on the 2022 Atlantic County General Election ticket.

However, Coursey is running in a brand new (never competed) district, as a result of the recent Atlantic County Redistricting process.

The Atlantic County Democrat “Map” was selected in a tie-breaker.

The Atlantic County Democrats strongly believe that they now have a great opportunity to win minority representation in two Districts on the Atlantic County Board of Commissioners.

By contrast, the Atlantic County Republicans believe that they now have an opportunity to defeat Coursey in the newly formulated District 1.

Coursey is seeking a 4th, 3-year term on the Atlantic County Board of Commissioners.

The new 1st District is comprised of:

  • Atlantic City.
  • West Atlantic City (Egg Harbor Township).
  • Ventnor.
  • Margate.
  • Longport.

"Our party is strong and united heading into 2022," said Atlantic County Democratic Committee Chairman Michael Suleiman.

“Over 250 Democrats viewed the Convention, either in-person at the Gateway Playhouse or virtually via Zoom. There were 208 delegates that voted in the election for Congress,” said Suleiman.

Alexander is now the prohibitive Democrat front-runner to face incumbent United States Congressman Jeff Van Drew, R-2, who is seeking his 3rd term, representing New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District.

Alexander is now the formally endorsed candidate in:

  • Atlantic County.
  • Ocean County.
  • Gloucester County.

The candidate who wins the Atlantic County endorsement almost always wins the party’s nomination.

General Election day is Tuesday, November 8, 2022, with extended early voting for nearly two weeks prior to Election Day itself.
