Baby, Mom Among 3 Shot in Asbury Park
Police say a 1-year-old girl and her mother are among three people who suffered gunshot wounds after someone opened fire on a city street in Asbury Park.
The Asbury Park Press reports that the injuries to the baby, her 29-year-old mother and a 19-year-old man are not life-threatening. The baby was hit on the leg beneath a diaper. It happened around 7:30 p.m. Monday on Comstock Street.
The mother and child were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center while the man came to the same hospital on his own according to CBS New York.
Police say 13 to 15 bullets were fired and that the woman and child were innocent bystanders. “We don’t know at this time if he was an innocent bystander or if he was an intentional target,” Capt. Anthony Salerno told NJ.com.
Resident Kathy Acevedo says she was indoors when the "pop, pop, pop" of gunfire made her dive to the floor for safety. She says children were outside playing when the shooting started.
An investigation is continuing. Asbury Park Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call 732-774-1300.
