Mays Landing, N.J. — A Camden man with six prior indictable convictions, four parole violations, and seven pending charges across four counties was found guilty Thursday by an Atlantic County jury of shooting a man on a Florida Avenue sidewalk in Atlantic City, the day after a fistfight between the two.

40-year-old Ricardo Berrios faces a maximum of two consecutive life terms in prison.

The Shooting

On July 5th, 2024, Atlantic City Police responded to the Unit South Block of Florida Avenue for a shooting.

Officers found Antoyane McCall of Atlantic City with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and arm. He was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's Trauma Unit, where he underwent multiple surgeries and survived.

Evidence at trial established that Berrios shot McCall on the sidewalk following a fistfight the night before.

Hours after the shooting, police located Berrios at the Downbeach Inn on unrelated warrants and found heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine on his person. Inside his motel room, investigators found ammunition and evidence he had been using the room as a cocaine manufacturing facility.

The handgun used in the shooting was recovered July 18, 2024, also in Atlantic City.

At the time of the crimes, Berrios was on pre-trial monitoring from Mercer County and had seven pending indictable charges across Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, and Mercer Counties. He has also been subject to two active domestic violence final restraining orders in New Jersey.

The Verdict

The jury found Berrios guilty on all counts, including attempted murder, aggravated assault, maintaining a narcotics production facility, multiple weapons offenses, possession of cocaine and heroin/fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute drugs, and tampering with physical evidence. The charges also included possession with intent to distribute drugs within 500 feet of a public park and possession of a firearm while committing a drug crime.

What Not to Do on a Traffic Stop According to a NJ Cop

My husband is a police officer. He is an amazing man who saves lives and upholds the law. He makes me proud every single day.

I know being a police officer can come with a lot of criticism, especially when there are bad eggs that give police officers a bad name. I can assure you that there are many police officers that uphold the law and do not abuse it, and my husband is one of them.

I hear stories when my husband comes home and he tells me that he encounters some crazy people. I feel like it is very simple to not get arrested by a police officer once you're pulled over or have an encounter with a cop. I went right to my hubby and he gave me some tips to share with all of you.
