Cape May Court House, N.J. — A coordinated traffic enforcement operation on several major roads in Cape May County resulted in four dozen vehicle stops, 17 summonses, and two arrests Tuesday, including one driver who was found with cocaine and an illegal weapon.

The operation was the fourth conducted under the Cape May County SHIELD Task Force ("Safety on Highways through Intensive Enforcement and Law Enforcement Deployment"), which is a multi-agency enforcement initiative launched by Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland that allows officers to enforce motor vehicle laws outside of their normal municipal boundaries.

Where They Operated

Ten law enforcement agencies participated in Tuesday's operation, which covered Route 47 South from the George Redding Bridge to Route 9, Route 47 North from Hand Avenue to Goshen-Swainton Road, Court House-South Dennis Road, and Route 147 in and out of North Wildwood.

Two Arrests

Among the 48 stops, officers made two arrests -- one driver on an outstanding traffic warrant, and a second driver charged with possession of cocaine and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Sutherland said in a social media post, "Our goal is to deter dangerous behavior, identify criminal activity, and ultimately prevent crashes and save lives."
