Election Challenge to Embattled Atlantic City, NJ, Mayor is Set
Long-time UNITE-HERE Local 54 President Bob McDevitt has formed a full slate of candidates to challenge Atlantic City, New Jersey Mayor Marty Small and his 3 candidates for City Council Members at Large.
McDevitt will be running for Mayor as a Democrat in the Democratic Primary election versus Small.
Small will be running under the cloud of being indicted by two different Atlantic County Grand Jury’s alleged criminal child abuse and witness tampering charges.
McDevitt will be joined on his ticket by City Council running mates:
John Devlin, Mohammed Akbar Hussain and Steve Young.
Devlin is an established, well known retired Atlantic City Police Officer.
Devlin served for more than 20 years as a Member of the Atlantic City Board of Education … many of those years as Board President.
Devlin is also the former Chairman of the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority.
At the time that Small orchestrated Devlin’s ouster, then Atlantic City Council President George Tibbitt publicly stated that “We (City of Atlantic City) owe John Devlin a public apology,” said Tibbitt.
Tibbitt then sent on to offer Devlin a public apology (on-air) on WPG talk Radio 95.5
Young is a long-time Atlantic City activist. Young is the President of the Atlantic City Chapter of the National Action Network.
Mohammed Akbar Hussain is a newcomer to the local electoral scene.
McDevitt is presently serving at the national level as President of the UNITE-HERE pension fund.
The McDevitt slate is running under the campaign banner of “Safe Clean Streets.”
The official announcement will take place on Friday, January 31, 2025 (specific time TBA), at California Avenue & The Boardwalk (In front of The Ritz) in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
