Happy New Year! The Somers Point plastic bag (with handles only) 5 cents per-bag tax goes into effect on January 1, 2019.

It’s a very bad idea. This is exactly the kind of government overreach that gets people thrown out of office.

People from many surrounding communities shop in Somers Point. This will prove to be universally unpopular.

It’s a local government’s attempt to play the role of social engineers of the public’s behavior.

I understand the environmental considerations. It’s simply not the role of government (local or otherwise) to implement taxes and fees like this.

The late Jim When proposed this bad idea and then promptly rejected it.

NOTE: Somers Point City Councilman Ron Meischker will be our guest this Monday, December 31, 2018 for the 7:00 a.m. hour. “Hurley in the Morning” on WPG Talk Radio.

I’m a big supporter of Ron’s... just not on this issue.
