The Anchorage Tavern is the oldest operated business establishment in Somers Point, New Jersey, (open) since 1874. That’s just an amazing record of endurance and longevity.

Our Family has been pretty regular and satisfied  customers of theirs for many years. It’s a great restaurant, demonstrating a consistent excellence in product and service.

Today, the following sign is posted outside of their restaurant.

For now, we’re taking this as though it is just for today (Sunday). They have already been closed on Mondays.

The posted sign highlights that the Sunday and Monday closing is to “give our staff a break,” which is quite understandable, as employees are working harder and longer than ever to keep things going these days.

This is a common refrain that we have been reporting about this year and especially during the past month.

Many long-time establishments have been closing forever and others are closing for one or more days every week.

It’s the result of the post-pandemic world that we presently live in. Many operators have stated that they are having supreme difficulties in recruiting and retaining staff.

Additionally, there are existing challenges in the supply chain, the high inflation and overall cost of doing business.

We have not been able to reach anyone at The Anchorage today, as they are closed.

We will be following up to see if today’s closing is just for one day, or, will The Anchorage be closing on Sunday and Monday going forward.

There's simply no way to tell by the wording of the current posted sign. Each time I read it, I change my mind as to whether it’s a one-day-only occurrence, or something more.

For now, just treat it as though the Sunday closing is just for today. We’ll report back with an update ASAP.
