TOMS RIVER — A Jackson Township man has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide stemming from an incident that occurred last month, according to a joint statement from the Toms River Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. 

Officers responded to a motor vehicle wreck at the intersection of Route 9 and Stevens Road on Tuesday, October 15th, at 7:50 p.m.

It was concluded that Thomas Marciano, 65, of Toms River was traveling northbound, was stopped behind a vehicle attempting to make a left turn into a Wawa when he was struck from behind by Douglas Thompson, 55, of Jackson.

Thompson consequently was charged with Driving Under The Influence, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, and Operating a Vehicle while Suspended or a Revoked License. He later was charged with Strict Liability Vehicular Homicide, Death by Auto and Vehicle Causing a Death While Suspended or Revoked. 

Toms River Police and members from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office arrested Thompson at his home on Friday, November 8th. 

Thompson currently is lodged at the Ocean County Jail, pending a detention hearing. 

The public is reminded that all defendants should be considered innocent until, or if, proven guilty in a court of law.
