ATLANTIC CITY — Passengers on a JetBlue flight from Newark to West Palm Beach got stuck when their flight was diverted just after takeoff.

Smoke filled the cockpit of JetBlue Flight 1443 after takeoff after 9 p.m. Wednesday forcing the crew to declare an emergency and land at Atlantic City International Airport at 10:50 p.m., FAA spokesman Jim Peters told the Townsquare News Network.

The passengers on board the Airbus A320 exited the plane and spent the night in Atlantic City instead of being taken to another plane to continue their flight. According to FlightAware.com, the flight resumed about 6:30 a.m. and arrived in Florida at 8:35 a.m. Peters did not know how many passengers were on the flight.

JetBlue said the plane was diverted after the crew reported an unknown odor in the cabin, which was found to come from the plane's galley. However, the airline would not comment on what accommodations were made for passengers in the terminal or confirm the number of passengers  on the flight.

A Twitter user who claimed to be a passenger said a coffee pot that burned was to blame.

Another self-identified passenger on Twitter, Lisa Zwerin, tweeted that the airline promised to send a plane overnight and passengers boarded the same plane to continue their flight.

Passenger Steven Toomey tweeted he would never fly JetBlue again.

Peters said no one was injured and an investigation continues into the matter.

The South Jersey Transportation Authority said they were looking into the incident.
