Johnny Mathis is Retiring, Final Concert Is Soon In New Jersey
Johnny Mathis is 89 years young. He will turn 90 on September 30, 2025.
Mathis announced on his Facebook page yesterday that he is retiring after 7 decades in the entertainment industry.
Johnny Mathis is an icon and a living legend. And I don’t say that lightly. He’s one of the last great crooners.
Mathis’ final concert will take place on May 18, 2025 at The Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey.
The announcement read:
While there are still some exciting concerts coming up, regrettably all Johnny Mathis concerts from June, 2025 onwards are now canceled,” according to to the statement.
The statement was as intellectually honest as any that you will ever see.
it unambiguously states that, “ age and memory issues, which have accelerated,” are the reasons why Mathis will retire from live performances.
The statement continues:
As many of you may already be aware, Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year. So, it’s with sincere regret that due to Mr. Mathis‘s age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts, from the Johnny Mathis Facebook post.
I met Johnny Mathis decades ago in the men’s clothing department at Macy’s in Hamilton Township, New Jersey.
I was buying a new tie and Johnny was buying a new pair of shoes … he was performing this same night at The Miss America Pageant final night of competition at the (then) iconic love televised program.
I had just appeared on stage at an event and warned Johnny to scuff up the leather bottoms of his new shoes … as the stage was very slippery at that time.
Johnny Mathis and I talked for about 10 minutes. He is such a kind man.
Because of the positions I have held over the past 45 years, I have met many star entertainers. Johnny Mathis is one of the nicest most grounded that I’ve ever met.
We caught up with Tom Cantone, President of Sports and Entertainment at MGE. Cantone booked Mathis during his Atlantic City casino executive days at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.
About Johnny Mathis, Cantone told us:
His voice was and stature was iconic, I booked him many times, mostly in Atlantic City where his name on the marquee was as big as any Star today. He was kind and grateful to see his fans. You didn't have to pay for a meet & greet. Chances Are, an artist like him will never come again, said Cantone.
Here is a post from yesterday from Johnny Mathis on his Facebook page:
Mark Giannantonio is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Resorts Casino Hotel Atlantic City.
Mathis appeared at Resorts in The Super Star Theater multiple times over the decades.
Giannantonio was also in the audience on September 11, 2022 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
About Mathis, Giannantonio said:
Johnny Mathis is a true professional and one of the greatest performers show business has ever seen. His style and elegance were unmatched. Having met him numerous times over the years, he always treated you like a friend, said Giannantonio.
Here are photos of Johnny Mathis, taken by Giannantonio in Charlottesville, Virginia on September 11, 2022.
Johnny Mathis was also my late, great Mother-in-Law, Joan Fineran’s favorite singer.
