The Social Security Administration has released their list of the most popular baby names in New Jersey for 2016. Does your baby's name make the cut?

The top five boys names:

  1. Liam
  2. Noah
  3. Matthew
  4. Michael
  5. Jacob

According to Everett Lo, a public affairs specialist with the Social Security Administration,  the 2016 list saw some changes from the 2015 list of most popular baby boy names in New Jersey. Lo said Mason moved off the list in 2016 and Noah moved from No. 4 to No. 2.

New Jersey's most popular baby boy names are similar to those that made the Social Security Administration's national list for 2016. The top five most popular baby boy names on the national list are Noah, Liam, William, Mason and James.

As for the girls, New Jersey's most popular names:

  1. Mia
  2. Olivia
  3. Emma
  4. Sophia
  5. Isabella

New Jersey's list of girls' names closely resembles the national list, with only Mia not in the top five on the national list. That name came in at No. 6. Ava, which isn't on New Jersey's list, came in at No. 3 on the national list.

The Social Security Administration has been tracking names since 1997.

"At the time of a child's birth, when parents supply the name when they apply for the Social Security number, we track that information across the country and by state," Lo said.

The national list also takes a look at the impact pop culture has on naming trends.

For 2016, Kehlani and Kylo saw the biggest increases. According to the Social Security Administration, Kehlani rose 2,487 spots on the girls' list from number 3,359 in 2015 to number 872 in 2016. The administration attributed this hike to singer Kehlani Parrish who was nominated for a Grammy last year.

For the boys, Kylo soared 2,368 spots, coming in at number 901 in 2016. In 2015, Kylo was number 3,269. As for why Kylo jumped so many spots, the administration thinks the popularity of Star Wars might have something to do with it since there's a character in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," by the name of Kylo Ren.
