Long-Time Atlantic County Official Will Not Seek Reelection

Amy Gatto is a protégé of the late, great Atlantic County Freeholder Joe Nickels.

As a young girl in school, Gatto was bitten by the public service “bug” because of Joe Nickels coming into the Hamilton Township public schools to speak before the students.

This was the beginning of what would be successful stints as a member of the Hamilton Board of Education, Township Committee and later as an Atlantic County Commissioner.

Gatto has served previously as Chairwoman of the Atlantic County Board of Commissioners.

"It has been a privilege to serve the residents of Atlantic County and to have earned their trust in seven consecutive, successful elections. It has been my mission to serve as an open, fair and listening ear to anyone needing help or wanting to enhance our area, I've dedicated myself to making our community a better place for two decades and now it's time to focus on my personal life and my physical and emotional health,” said Gatto.

Gatto has served 3 terms (3 years each) as an Atlantic County Commissioner.

Previous to this, Gatto was elected to the Hamilton Township Board of Education and next as a member of the Hamilton Township Committee.

Gatto is only 43 years old, yet, she has served for 20 years in these three elected positions. That is quite impressive.

Gatto is the first female to serve as Chair of the Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders in its 182 year history (in 2019).

Most elected officials with 20 years of service are typically 20-plus years older than Gatto.

Gatto is young enough, that after recharging her batteries, she could easily decide to come back to electoral public service some day.
