Macy’s at Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing, NJ, not closing this year, but…

It has been quite some time since we've been able to write two good stories about Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing on back-to-back days.

New Furniture Store Coming to Hamilton Mall

On Tuesday, we shared the news that a new furniture store is moving into half of the old JCPenney / Shoppers World space.

Home Living Furniture appears to be a few months away from opening and they are now hiring new employees.

A quick look into the store recently revealed a few displays that have been set up.

Is Hamilton Mall Macy's Closing?

Now comes word that Macy's at Hamilton Mall will not be closing this year.

As for why people might have assumed that, let's go back a few months.

At the end of February, Macy's announced that they would be closing 150 stores across the country, with 50 shutting down this fiscal year, as the department store chain battled against declining sales.

Once the dust settles, the company will focus its efforts on its remaining 350 stores.

Tony Spring, Macy’s CEO, said in a statement,

We are making the necessary moves to reinvigorate relationships with our customers through improved shopping experiences, relevant assortments and compelling value.

So once people heard lots of Macy's stores would be closing, countless people on various social media platforms all sang the same song: "There's no way the Hamilton Mall Macy's stays open!"

Those people thought wrong — at least for now.

It's no secret that Hamilton Mall has been declining over the past several years.

Sears left in 2018 and JCPenney departed the following year. COVID hit. Foot traffic dropped off sharply as more people bought things online. Chains of stores now too numerous to mention have either shrunk their footprint or have closed completely.

So what about Macy's in Mays Landing?

We went right to the source and asked a Macy's spokesperson a blunt question: are you closing the Mays Landing store?

This was their reply:

A final decision on specific locations has yet to be made. There is a current evaluation underway comparing the potential real estate value and the future sales growth profitability potential. We look forward to continuing to serve our customers at this time. If at some point we proceed with closing this location, the soonest this will happen will be in 2025.

So, Macy's appears to be safe for at least the next six months. But what happens in the new year still seems to be anyone's guess.
