• A Mays Landing man became trapped inside a recycled asphalt bin in EHT
  • Workers tried to free him for about 20 minutes before requesting emergency assistance
  • Rescue crews extricated him after approximately 2.5 hours

Egg Harbor Township, N.J. — A Mays Landing man spent more than two hours trapped inside a recycled asphalt bin at a Doughty Road facility in EHT Tuesday morning after falling backwards into a container where a partial collapse of asphalt left his legs buried under the material.

26-year-old Cameron Briggs was inside the bin at AE Stone at 1435 Doughty Road when he fell. Asphalt shifted and landed on his lower extremities, leaving him seated with his legs straight out and material piled just above his waist.

Workers tried to free him for about 20 minutes before calling for help.

Briggs remained conscious and alert throughout the ordeal, but the weight of the asphalt made it impossible for him to move, and several more tons of material threatened to collapse on top of him.

Emergency crews worked for approximately two and a half hours before successfully extricating him. He was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries for further evaluation.

The response involved the Egg Harbor Township Police Department; the Farmington, Bargaintown, and Cardiff Volunteer Fire Departments; the Atlantic City Fire Department Technical Rescue Team; Egg Harbor Township EMS; AtlantiCare paramedics; Egg Harbor Township Public Works; and the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management.
