New Jersey AG On Fatal Police-Involved Shooting In Millville, NJ

New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport has confirmed that an investigation involving a fatal police-involved fatal shooting in Millville, New Jersey is currently underway. It is required under New Jersey state law.

Davenport has revealed that the decedent and officer involved. The civilian has been identified as Shaun Murphy, 47 years old, from Millville, New Jersey.

The shooting took place on Thursday, August 6, 2026 at a home, located on the 300 block of Hazel Boulevard in Millville, New Jersey.

Davenport has confirmed some preliminary investigation findings as follows:

Police Officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a residence in Millville in the morning hours of August 6. During an encounter with Mr. Murphy inside of the residence, Cumberland Counter Prosecutor's Office Sergeant John Borelli discharged his department-issued weapon, striking Mr. Murphy, who was subsequently pronounced deceased. Law enforcement recovered a handgun at the scene, said Davenport.

Davenport has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that no additional information is available at this time.

This Investigation Is Required By New Jersey State Law

It is important to note that anytime there is death involving a police officer weapon discharge, an investigation is immediately triggered as follows:

N.J.S.A. 52:17B(a)(2) requires the Attorney General's Office to conduct investigations of a person's death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer's official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. It requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
