There are no winners here, said Van Drew. Democrats should have already passed this routine continuing resolution. It is Joe Biden's own bill, for God's sake. And Republicans—you cannot just let healthcare subsidies expire and have nothing ready to replace them. Let's stop this madness. Good people are being hurt. The country being open is not some political talking point. These are people's lives, paychecks, and peace of mind. And while this goes on, no Member of Congress should be getting paid. Not one. That is why I have forfeited my paycheck since the beginning of the shutdown, and it is why I am cosponsoring legislation to stop Members of Congress from collecting a paycheck during any shutdown. We should feel the same pain that hardworking Americans are feeling right now. Maybe then we would get this done a lot faster, said Van Drew.

My Proposal Going Forward

In the future, the American people should demand of its elected leaders the following:

If they shut the federal government down — they do not get paid. And, they permanently forfeit their pay lost and are not reimbursed when the shutdown ends.

Just watch how fast we’ll never have a federal government shutdown ever again.

These elected officials are willing to shut things down because they are completely unaffected by it.
