NEWARK — Extensive delays are expected in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport later on Saturday after the airport grounded all flights because an airplane blew two tires.

The airport made the announcement stopping all arrivals and departures about 1:30 p.m. after an airplane skidded off a runway.

An hour later, the airport said that all passengers aboard that plane had safely gotten off and that the airport was working on resuming flights.

United Airlines said Flight 627 from Denver was landing at 1 p.m. Saturday with 166 passengers when the tires blew.

The FAA said the plane skidded off the pavement and its landing gear became stuck in a grassy area, but United spokesman Robert Einhorn said the plane remained on the runway.

The airline said some passengers with minor injuries refused medical attention and no one was seriously injured.

Travelers should check their flight status online.
