It appears to be a glitch.

If you received an e-mail that reads like this...

Hi CHRISTOPHER,
Thank you for sending us your device. It has been picked up by the carrier, and we'll let you know as soon as we receive it.

Here is the tracking number for your reference: [number]

...you can disregard it. In an informal chat with a Verizon customer service representative this morning, they said, "our system had a glitch and sent all our customers email same as what you have received." (the agent may have missed a word or two, but you get the idea).
