Philadelphia 76ers Make it Official With Al Horford

Hold your breath no more, Sixers fans, because the deal with Al Horford is done.

Roughly about a week ago, the 2019 NBA Free Agency period opened up with a bang. Amongst other big transactions around the league, the Philadelphia 76ers made a few splashes. It started with a max offer, which was signed by their forward, Tobias Harris.

Then, the Sixers retained some bench depth by bringing back Mike Scott on a two-year deal. While everybody waited on the Jimmy Butler announcement, the Sixers were well-aware of the fact that their playoff star had his heart set in South Beach. Therefore, they worked on another big signing instead, which would soon be announced.

For the 2019 season and beyond, the Sixers will have former Boston Celtics big man Al Horford. Over the next four years, Horford is set to make $109 million. The veteran big man will most likely spend most of his time playing power forward as Joel Embiid remains at center. However, there's a good chance that Horford plays some backup center as well.

With 12 years of experience under his belt, Horford brings a veteran experience that is much-needed in Philadelphia. He served the Celtics well in a leadership role for the past three years but decided that it was time to officially move on in 2019. On Wednesday, Horford made the departure official as he bid farewell to the Celtics via Twitter.

"Thank you Boston," Horford wrote moments before his deal with the Sixers became official. As we know, it takes time for deals to go through in the NBA fully, and the wait causes a bit of a suspense. and although it's rare, sometimes players can back out of their initial agreements after thinking long and hard about the move. That won't be the case here, though, Horford is finally ready to throw on the Sixers' colors.
