A centuries-old inn in Cape May has been voted one of the top ten historic hotels in America by readers of USA Today.

Congress Hall in Cape May, which first opened in 1816 and then later reopened in 1878 following a fire, has ranked 9th on the prestigious list.

In today's travel landscape... a bit of history is often welcome. Each of these classic lodgings, nominated for the title of Best Historic Hotel by a panel of hotel experts, has witnessed a great deal of history, and each has held true to its historic roots and unique sense of place.

A panel of experts worked with editors at USA Today to pick the initial nominees; the final rankings were determined by popular vote.

Coming in at the top is the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN. The only other historic inn on the list on the East Coast was the Historic Hotel Bethlehem in Bethlehem, PA, which placed second.
