Officials are advising you to check your pantry as one type of ready-to-eat soup sold at ShopRite stores may have been misbranded and could contain undeclared allergens.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says containers of ShopRite-branded fresh, fully-cooked, ready-to-eat chicken noodle soup may actually contain Italian-style wedding soup, which contains milk, a known allergen, which is not declared on the label.

The FSIS issued a public health alert to ensure that consumers are aware that these products should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase.

What to look for

The fresh, fully cooked, ready-to-eat Italian-style wedding soup products labeled as chicken noodle soup were produced on August 8th of this year.

20-oz. plastic cups labeled “A SHOPRITE BRAND bowl & basket CHICKEN NOODLE soup” with a use by date of “09/23/23“ is subject to the alert.

The product bears the establishment number “EST. P-18468” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to stores in New Jersey and New York.

The problem was discovered when a ShopRite worker who was stocking shelves found soups labeled as chicken noodle and Italian-style wedding soup in the same shipping box.

What to do

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to people consuming the soup. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them; they should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
