Sixty-seven percent of districts will get more aid next year, more than $835 million altogether. But 182 districts are losing nearly $186 million.

The funding formula was approved in 2008 and upheld by the courts, though it was only followed for a year. A task force could examine it for updates.

Federal education officials have ordered New Jersey to restore millions of dollars in school funding cuts to as many as 81 school districts and charter schools or risk forfeiting billions in federal aid.

Lawmakers meet this afternoon to begin approval of New Jersey’s 2022 state budget, with the intention of getting it to Gov. Phil Murphy’s desk Thursday.

A planned increase in school aid was erased two months ago. The proposed state budget makes no additional cuts.
