This is it — 6ABC/Philadelphia meteorologist says goodbye this weekend
Viewers of 6ABC in Philadelphia will have one last chance to watch a longtime meteorologist on TV this weekend before he leaves for a new job in a much warmer and sunnier climate.
And they have palm trees, too. Lots of them.
Of course, we're talking about Chris Sowers, who worked behind the scenes at Channel 6 from 2000 through 2005 and returned to be in front of the camera in 2011.
If you've missed how this has unfolded, here's a quick recap.
Early in August, Sowers took to Facebook and posted the following very simple message:
I have huge career news coming! I’ll be making an announcement soon.
As expected, social media went nuts.
The next day, Sowers announced he was leaving and moving to Florida to work at a TV station in West Palm Beach (it's hard to believe someone would choose palm trees over the Schuylkill Expressway...).
His statement read in part,
My family and I have come to the extremely difficult decision to move on from WPVI 6abc. A huge opportunity has presented itself and I will be joining the talented WPTV weather team in West Palm Beach, Florida in October. This is an opportunity for me to finally move off of weekends. I'm excited to work in one of the busiest weather markets in the entire country! You have no idea how difficult of a decision this was for me.
As longtime 6ABC viewers know, very few people ever leave the station. It's an institution. That's what has made Action News such a mainstay in the region. The people you watched on TV when you were growing up are the same people that you are watching as an adult now.
So, for Sowers to announce his departure from WPVI, it must have been a very good opportunity.
As he posted on Facebook a few weeks ago, this will be his final weekend (September 28-29) at Channel 6, however, he says he will remain active in this area online.
Sowers will debut in the Sunshine State around October 18th and he says one of his first assignments will be broadcasting live from a Taylor Swift concert in Miami.
Not a bad way to start a new job.
