The term Legend is overused in society, today. But, not in the case of Stan Bergman.

In Bergman’s case, it’s an accurate description and it fits him perfectly. Additionally, Bergman is as modest as the great ones come.

He doesn’t need to talk about himself, as so many others have willingly done so on his behalf for the past 7 decades.

Bergman spent 67 years on the Ventnor City, New Jersey Beach Patrol … where has been the Chief since 1987, (the past 38 years). Bergman has just retired as Chief.

Stan Bergman’s Resumé Is From Central Casting

Just look at Bergman’s remarkable record of accomplishment:

  • coached for 22 years at the University of Pennsylvania .
  • coached for 20 years at Holy Spirit High School.
  • coached five U.S. Olympians.
  • received four Coach of the Year awards from the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges while at The University of Pennsylvania.
  • Led The University of Pennsylvania to the heavyweight team 1991 national championship.
  • IRA Championship titles in 1989 and 1992.
  • four Eastern Sprints titles (1986, 1991, 1996, 1998).
  • He coached multiple teams in the Henley Royal Regatta in England.
  • served as Director of Rowing Affairs at The University of Pennsylvania.
  • In 2017, the prestigious Class Day at The University of Pennsylvania was renamed Stan Bergman Class Day. This annual event is a long standing tradition.
  • Bergman teams at Holy Spirit High School won the Henley Royal Regatta in England four times and 18 Holy Spirit boats won national championships under Bergman’s direction.

Stockton University Honored Bergman

On March 9, 2019, Bergman was showcased at an epic event when Stockton University dropped the gauntlet and announced to the world, their intentions of becoming a national powerhouse in the sport of rowing.

The event drew hundreds to Stockton’s Atlantic City campus … they honored Bergman and raised significant funds for the Stockton University rowing program.

Stan Bergman Retires From Ventnor City Beach Patrol

After 67 years on The Ventnor City Beach Patrol … almost 40 years as Chief, Bergman has retired.

The new Ventnor City Beach Patrol Chief is David Funk … who also serves as a Lieutenant of the Margate City Fire Department.

Bergman’s Plaque at The University of Pennsylvania Reads:

A four time EARC Coach of the Year, he had an immediate impact as head coach, leading the Quakers to their best season in 16 years with an 8-1 Cup record, an Ivy championship, silver medals at the Amsterdam Invitational, and a finalist in the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in just his second season. His 1990 Varsity Eight finished with an 8-0 Cup record, just the second in Penn history. Won the National Championship in 1991, two IRA Chamionship titles in 1989 and 1992, and four Eastern Sprints titles (1986, 1991, 1996, 1998). Overall, compiled 110 victories in his 22 years and coached five rowers who went on to compete in the Olympic Games.

Yes, Stan Bergman is a living legend.
