Absecon, N.J. — An Atlantic County man has been sentenced to more than half a century behind bars for sexually assaulting multiple juveniles.

Absecon Man Sentenced to More Than Five Decades in Prison

Last Thursday, June 18th, 45-year-old Alfonso Chavez of Absecon was sentenced to 57 years in state prison. He must serve 85%, or about 49 years, before being eligible for parole, which would make him around 90 years old.

If ever released, Chavez would be subject to Megan's Law registration and parole supervision for life.

Investigation Began in December 2023

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said that following an investigation in December 2023, Chavez was charged and arrested for sexually assaulting multiple children in incidents that occurred in Absecon.

In January 2024, following a hearing, he was ordered to remain in custody pending the resolution of his case.

Convictions Included Aggravated Sexual Assault

Following a jury trial in January 2026, Chavez was convicted of multiple counts each of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of children.

The case was investigated by Detectives Joseph McVey and Caryn Campanelli, and Sgt. Ryan Ripley of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office's Special Victims Unit. Chief Assistant Prosecutor David Ruffenach tried the case for the State with the assistance of Victim Witness Advocate Kristie Gardener and Detective Olivia Greenberg.
