As COVID-19 cases continue to spike in Ocean County, quite the opposite is happening just a few dozen miles south on the Garden State Parkway.

On Tuesday, officials with the Cape May County Department of Health reported just four new cases of COVID-19. Today's low number continues a trend of relatively few new cases that goes back several weeks.

As of today, 1,346 positive cases have been reported in Cape May County since the virus began to spread across the state; 92 people have died.

In stark contrast, officials in Ocean County reported 729 new cases of COVID-19 between this past Saturday and Monday. Ocean County has had a total of over 13,300 cases of the virus.

Ocean County Public Health Coordinator Dan Regenye told the Townsquare News Network that recent events, "could be fueling some of the cases itself," but there was also an I.T. issue with the state's reporting system last weekend and there's also a testing site in Ocean County doing batch reporting of the numbers.

"They were not all new positives, so to speak, they were positive tests for COVID that occurred over a two/two and a half week time period," Regenye said. "Those were positives that if they were reported timely and to the system, they would have been reported over a two/two and a half week time window."
