Atlantic City, NJ, Police Chief Denies Traffic Stop Allegations

Atlantic City, New Jersey Police Chief Jim Sarkos has released a video of a recent alleged traffic infraction that has led to allegations of targeting by a local immigration group.

Sarkos has also released a forceful statement of support for the police officer and a defense for the validity of the traffic stop.

The Allegation Is From A Local Immigration Group

El Pueblo Unido, a local immigration group is alleging that one of its members was pulled over by the Atlantic City Police this past Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at approximately 10:00 a.m.

The traffic stop took place at Atlantic Avenue and lowa Avenue, near the Clayton Graham Public Safety Building.

The suggestion is that the individual was pulled over because of the immigration work that the organization is doing.

El Pueblo Unido is memorializing ICE actions throughout Atlantic County.

Atlantic City Police Chief Jim Sarkos Has Released A Public Statement Regarding The Matter

The Atlantic City Police Department is aware of a recent Facebook post by El Pueblo Unido regarding a motor vehicle stop conducted by an Atlantic City police officer.
The post creates a misleading impression about why the vehicle was stopped and the actions taken by the officer. The facts are straightforward: the officer personally observed a dangerous motor vehicle violation that created a serious risk to the safety of the public. For transparency, we are releasing a video taken from a city surveillance camera of the motor vehicle violation in question. The officer did exactly what our officers are trained, sworn, and expected to do. He conducted a motor vehicle stop after observing dangerous driving and issued the appropriate summons, said Sarkos.

Word is Spreading Around Town

That El Pueblo Unido is planning to hold a protest regarding the Atlantic City Police traffic stop.

El Pueblo Unido has publicly alleged that an Atlantic City Police Officer was assisting ICE.

Chief Sarkos Emphasized

That the Atlantic City Police Department “follows the New Jersey Attorney General's Immigrant Trust Directive. To suggest otherwise is unfair to the officer and misleading to the public,” said Sarkos.

Chief Sarkos Concluded The Matter By Saying:

“As Chief of Police, I expect our officers to take action when they observe conduct that puts the public at risk of serious injury or death. I would expect nothing less from them, and I strongly support the officer's actions in this instance. This was a traffic stop resulting from an observed traffic violation. Nothing more,” said Sarkos.
