Why Police Stopped 137 Motorists in One Day Across Atlantic County, NJ
Police across Atlantic County stopped more than 100 drivers in a single day as part of a coordinated traffic safety crackdown aimed at reducing deadly crashes on local roads.
The Atlantic County Association of Chiefs of Police (ACACP) states that it has partnered with other groups in pursuing New Jersey's "Target Zero" vision of eliminating deaths from vehicle crashes.
How Many Drivers Were Stopped and Why
To make that happen, back on Friday, January 16th, the Atlantic City, Absecon, Brigantine, Egg Harbor Township, Hamilton Township, Hammonton, Mullica Township, Pleasantville, and Stockton University Police Departments and the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office conducted coordinated traffic enforcement efforts.
According to the ACACP, officers stopped a total of 137 motorists, resulting in two DWI arrests in Atlantic City and Egg Harbor Township, while issuing a total of 106 traffic summonses for violations in those jurisdictions.
Two additional arrests were made by Stockton University Police and the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office.
Trending in a Better Direction
These efforts are being made so that the recent decrease in traffic-related fatalities continues. In 2024, 58 people died on Atlantic County's roadways, which was a ten-year high. That number dropped to 34 last year.
What Police Want Drivers to Do Differently
Officials encourage area drivers to slow down, obey speed limits, stop at intersections with traffic signals, eliminate distracted driving by putting phones down, be more attentive to surroundings, and not drive impaired.
