Camden Man Charged After Brutal Collingswood Home Invasion Attack on Elderly Couple
Collingswood, N.J. — A Camden man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he and an accomplice broke into a Collingswood home, beat an elderly man in his 80s while demanding gold coins, then dragged him upstairs to where his wife was lying on the floor with a bag over her head.
32-year-old Jose Sanabria was arrested on July 8th in Philadelphia by the U.S. Marshals Service and is being held in Pennsylvania pending extradition to New Jersey.
He was charged with two counts of first-degree armed robbery, first-degree home invasion burglary, second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
An investigation into a second suspect remains active.
3:30 in the Morning
According to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, Collingswood police responded to the 100 block of East Summerfield Avenue just after 3:30 AM on May 31st for a report of a home invasion.
Officers learned that two men had entered the home of an elderly couple, both in their 80s.
The husband told police the intruders immediately began punching him in the face, demanding to know where he kept his gold coins. One of the suspects was armed with a pocket knife. The men then dragged him upstairs, where his wife was already on the floor with a bag over her head. They told him not to move or they would kill her.
The suspects fled with cash and gold valued at approximately $5,000.
Tracked Down in Philadelphia
Detectives from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and Collingswood Police used surveillance footage, cellular data, and other evidence to identify Sanabria as one of the individuals involved.
He was charged on June 23rd, and a fugitive investigation was launched by the U.S. Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force. Sanabria was located and arrested in Philadelphia two weeks later.
