Cape May County Reports First COVID-19 Case, 2nd and 3rd for Atlantic County

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in South Jersey continues to slowly increase.

The State of New Jersey is reporting there are now three positive test results for COVID-19 in Atlantic County. This update follows an announcement made Wednesday morning that the first case was confirmed Tuesday night. In that instance, a man in his 60s with underlying health conditions had tested positive. He is being treated at home while health officials conduct further investigations.

Meanwhile, officials in Cape May County say a 30-year-old man from New York City tested positive at a local health care facility for COVID-19 while visiting the area.

News of the virus in the southern-most part of the state underscores comments made recently by Cape May County Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton who was asking out-of-towners to not visit the county.

Thorton was concerned since Cape May County only has one hospital. Seniors account for one-quarter of the county's population while second or vacation homes account for 48% of housing. Lots of out-of-town people could quickly overwhelm the county's medical system.
