The expression that every vote counts is playing out in real time in Atlantic County, New Jersey. The New Jersey Assembly election result in District 2 could not be closer.

No one expected this result versus two unknown Democrat challengers.

The Race For The Atlantic County State Assembly Seats Was Supposed To Be A Rout …

It wasn’t. In fact, it can’t be any closer than it is at the moment.

With 100 percent of the ”regular” voting methods counted, here are the current standings:

  • Assemblyman Don Guardian (R) = 39,183
  • Maureen Rowan (D) = 38,195
  • Joanne Famularo (D) = 38,009
  • Assemblywoman Claire Swift (R) = 37, 932

Guardian’s Lead Is Safe

Guardian has a nearly 1,000 vote lead over Rowan. Guardian will finish first when all of the votes are counted.

Any one of the 3 remaining candidates can still win the second open New Jersey Assembly seat.

Almost every pairing of New Jersey assembly running mates throughout the state, had a closer margin than Guardian and Swift. Somehow, Guardian has about 1.250 more votes than Swift.

What Votes Are Left To Count?

Approximately 2,000 provisional ballots. All of these ballots will not be counted. The Atlantic County Board of Elections will examine each one of these ballots. The 4-member board will vote on each one of these ballots.

There are also an unknown amount of ballots that were left in various drop boxes prior to 8:00 p.m. last. night.

Finally, a certain (likely limited) number of ballots, where minor voter mistakes may have occurred have an opportunity to “cure” their ballot.

Incumbent Assemblywoman Claire Swift

Swift currently trails Rowan by 263 votes. Famularo trails her running mate (Rowan) by only 186 votes.

Swift will have to jump ahead of the two Democrats to retain her Assembly seat. It won’t be easy.

Republicans may end up losing one of their legislative seats, which would create a split party representation.

If Claire Swift Loses …

It will be a great loss for Atlantic County and the New Jersey state legislature.
