Road work returns to the Delaware Memorial Bridge creating delays that start on the southbound New Jersey Turnpike.

Two lanes heading into Delaware are closed until 8 p.m. for the replacement of suspension ropes near the mid-span of the bridge, according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority. The closures will also be in place on Tuesday, June 14 and 21 starting at 5 a.m.

There's a reason the work is being done on Tuesdays.

“We want to minimize the inconvenience on our customers and our historical data indicates that Tuesdays are the lowest volume days on the Delaware Memorial Bridge,” said Shekhar Scindia, project engineer for the DRBA

The work began in April when two lanes were suddenly closed for the work deemed "urgent" by the DRBA. "The traffic has been shifted to the right lane to reduce the load in the work area to maintain required structural factors of safety during this process," Delaware River & Bay Authority spokesman Jim Salmon said in April.

Townsquare Media's Jill Myra said taking Interstate 95 into Delaware will keep you away from the delays on the Turnpike. "Get off the Turnpike at Exit 3 for Route 322 and the Commodore Barry Bridge. That will take you right to 95," Myra said.

Scindia said that if the work is postponed because of weather, the work would take place on Wednesday which Scindia said in the second lowest volume day.
