Egg Harbor Township Police Officer Strikes Pedestrian on Black Horse Pike

Egg Harbor Township, N.J. — An on-duty Egg Harbor Township police officer struck a pedestrian while driving a marked patrol vehicle on the Black Horse Pike just after midnight Wednesday.

58-year-old Alvin Powers of Pleasantville suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's Trauma Unit in Atlantic City for treatment.

According to the department, Ofc. William Danz was driving eastbound on the Black Horse Pike in a marked patrol vehicle around 12:07 AM when his cruiser struck Powers, who was crossing the highway near Old Egg Harbor Road.

Danz immediately stopped and rendered aid until EMS arrived.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation revealed Powers was not using a nearby marked crosswalk, was wearing dark clothing, and was crossing in a poorly lit area during heavy rain.

In a press release, EHT PD Chief Fred Spano reminded pedestrians to be safe on area roadways, urging them to stay alert, avoid distractions, make eye contact with vehicles before crossing, and use marked crosswalks whenever available.

The crash remains under investigation by Sgt. Edward Stearns and Ofc. Kevin Brady of the EHTPD's Traffic Safety Unit.
