Following a devastating fire, Playland's Castaway Cove has announced when they will be opening for the spring and summer of 2021.

It was the morning of January 30th when people across South Jersey woke-up and either saw pictures online or on TV of an inferno right in the heart of the Ocean City Boardwalk. Initial reports said a large fire was at 10th & the Boardwalk and, if you were like me, your heart sank once you saw exactly what was burning -- Playland's Castaway Cove.

The fire reached four alarms before being placed under control. When the smoke cleared, the Castaway Cove building, including the famous pirate ship on the roof of that building was gone, as were a couple of small restaurants -- however, thanks to a wind blowing from land straight out to sea, the fire did not spread to adjacent buildings and their rides were not damaged.

And the fact that their rides were not damaged given what the fire looked like is quite a testament to the firefighters who worked for hours in sub-freezing temperatures to keep that fire, which was ruled accidental, under control.

Now that we are heading into spring and summer, and thanks to Castaway Cove having more than one way in and out of their ride area, they have announced they will be opening on the weekend of March 27th and 28th, according to an e-mail. That weekend, they will be open from noon to 5PM, weather permitting.

Getting ready for the crowds of spring and summer is stressful enough on its own -- and the pandemic certainly hasn't made things easier. Now, Playland is dealing with recovering from a fire on top of all of that. We certainly wish them the best this season.
