Former Atlantic City, NJ, Council President May Plead Guilty
About 15 years ago, former Atlantic City Council President Craig Callaway’s said, “I’m never going back to jail.”
He meant it. However, Callaway is facing a new, critical tipping point in his life, where he will have to decide (soon) whether to accept a current plea deal that is on table.
Callaway stands criminally charged with multiple allegations involving alleged election fraud, involving mail-in ballots from the General Election of 2022.
I telephoned Craig Callaway yesterday, however, he politely advised that he could not discuss his current circumstances at this time.
In 2008, Callaway accepted responsibility for taking bribes and participating in a scheme to blackmail former Atlantic City Councilman Gene Robinson.
Callaway spent 3 years in prison and was released in 2010.
Regarding the latest matter, there is a February 13, 2025 plea hearing in United States District Court in Camden, New Jersey before the Honorable U.S. District Court Judge Renee Marie Bumb.
While Callaway has advised that he cannot risk publicly speaking about the charges that he is currently facing … During many previous on-air interviews … Callaway repeatedly maintained his innocence.
What remains to be determined, will Callaway agree to plead guilty to federal officials … or, is he willing to roll the dice and try to win at a full blown federal trial?
Or, will Callaway try to press his luck with a new United States Attorney for New Jersey … as it appears that New Jersey Senator Doug Steinhardt will be selected by President Donald Trump to be the next United States Attorney for New Jersey.
New Jersey Senator Michael Testa appears to have been a close second for the coveted United States Attorney for New Jersey position.
Callaway is 64 years old and does not want to spend the next 1 to 5 years of his life in a federal prison cell, halfway house, home confinement, or, any other unpleasant penalty that could potentially be meted out by the federal government.
The federal government has a high 90 percentile conviction rate average for those defendants who decide to go to trial against them.
Below, are various Atlantic City photos that speak volumes to the phrase that a picture is worth a thousand words:
