The Atlantic County, New Jersey Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that the former Deputy Atlantic County (New Jersey) Superintendent of Elections has been sentenced as follows:

Michael A. Gibbons, 38, from Glendora, NJ, was sentenced to four years of probation conditioned on serving 364 days in the Atlantic County Jail which may be served by day reporting. The sentence was imposed pursuant to Gibbons' April 6, 2023, guilty plea to one count of third-degree theft by deception and one count of fourth-degree theft by deception. Gibbons was serving as the Atlantic County Deputy Superintendent of Elections at the time of the offenses, according to a public statement by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

 

Gibbons admitted that on April 7, 2017, that he added unauthorized overtime hours to be placed on a subordinate employee’s payroll record.

Gibbons furthered his crimes by directing the employee to deposit the money into an account that he had designated for it to be diverted to.

Gibbons also pled guilty to another crime on May 12, 2017, when he approved the payroll time cards for two employees for regular work hours.

Instead of regular work, Gibbons directed the two employees to clean his mother's house during regular witk hours.

The combined total of the two thefts amounted to $911.00, which is the amount of resolution that Gibbons is required to make.

As a condition to this guilty plea, Gibbons must permanently forfeit all current and future public employment eligibility.
