GWB, Lincoln & Holland Tunnels Getting Rid of Toll Booths
One of the worst things about commuting to New York is about to be over. Well, sort of.
The Port Authority Commission has announced plans to remove toll booths from the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, and Holland Tunnel. The plan is NOT to end all toll booths, by the way, it's simply to make the crossings become strictly cashless tolls.
Officials hope the removal of physical toll booths will reduce traffic (and accidents) in the area. Currently, there are around 1,200 crashes a year around toll plazas.
Kevin O’Toole, Board Chairman, says there will also be an environmental benefit to removing toll booths, too. Cars will no longer have to slow down or stop to accommodate for traffic and accidents; it’s estimated that 210 hours of driving will be spared annually. This means less fuel burned and less CO2 in the air, O'Toole explained to NJ.com.
EZ Pass users won’t have to do anything differently, though they will likely notice less traffic. If you usually pay cash, you’ll be billed in the mail.
Officials also promised that no toll workers will be laid off. Instead, union workers will be transferred to other positions.
The system is set to be completed by early 2021.
