MAAC Gives Back Begins This Friday In Atlantic City
In 2020 the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference will be bringing their Conference Basketball Tournament to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, but they are not waiting until then to give back to the community by starting this Friday.
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, in conjunction with the Atlantic City Board of Education and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), will begin their “MAAC Gives Back” community outreach program in Atlantic City starting November 15th. This program will pair Atlantic City students with the Women’s and Men’s Basketball Student-Athletes and Coaches from the eleven MAAC core member institutions. This Friday, Monmouth University Coaches and Players will be at Martin Luther King Jr. School Complex from 9:00 AM-2:00 PM to introduce themselves to students, providing them with goals and incentives associated with the program.
There will be a special appearance by Women’s Basketball Legend Katie Smith who will be introducing a district wide art poster contest. Smith is a three time Olympic Gold Medalist, a seven-time WNBA all-star, and she retired as the all-time scoring leader in women’s professional basketball history. Smith is also the former New York Liberty Head Coach.
The 26th annual “MAAC Gives Back” is a community outreach program that includes curriculum involving reading, writing, statistics, geography, art projects and related subjects. Teachers will be integrating this programming into their “Readers Become Leaders” program whose goals are to motivate students and place emphasis on the value of being involved with sports teams, along with the importance of doing well in school, attendance, and good decision-making. Also, there is a MAAC Essay Contest for students in first-to-fourth grades and fifth-to eighth graders.
The MAAC Basketball Championships, will be played at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City from March 10-14, 2020. For more information about member schools, tournament schedule, and tickets click here
