Movie Executive Producer Refutes Atlantic City Mayor Allegation
Fred Furman is the Executive Producer of the motion picture “People Not Places,” starring Shirley MacLaine and Stephen Dorff.
The movie was extensively set in Atlantic City, along with scenes that were filmed in Ventnor, Margate, Ocean City and Pleasantville.
I had a very pleasant conversation with Fred Furman, who is the Father of Brad Furman, who is the talented director of the movie.
Fred called me last evening to directly respond to allegations about Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small … that were made by John Devlin.
Devlin is a 32-year Teamster member who worked on the movie.
Devlin alleged that Small used “strong arm” tactics to acquire a small acting role in the movie.
This is the specific allegation that was made by Devlin against Small:
"When Brad Furman called for more police details, he was redirected to the mayors office. When speaking to mayor, he wanted a 10:00 a.m. private meeting with him at the Tropicana. He (Furman) was like "I have a movie to shoot!" Because they didn't want to cause waves they found a spot for him. The audacity of someone just to get a spot in the limelight. I mean I always knew he liked to be the center of attention, but when you basically strong arm someone to get a part in a movie is beyond my understanding and totally unethical!" said Devlin."
Devlin made the allegations about Small on Monday, February 3, 2025, on-air on WPG Talk Radio 95.5 FM.

Fred Furman did acknowledge that Small asked to have a meeting with Brad Furman.
Fred Furman advised that it was difficult for Brad Furman to honor the meeting request, as he was busy shooting the movie that day on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City.
However, Brad Furman made the time for the meeting with Small because having a good relationship with Atlantic City was vitally important to the movie.
Fred Furman confirmed to me that Brad Furman and Marty Small discovered during their meeting that they had previously met years ago, as opponents in a college basketball tournament.
Small is a former Stockton University Hall of Fame basketball player.
Fred Furman also confirmed that they had a few small parts in the movie that had not yet been cast.
Fred Furman confirmed that Brad Furman asked Marty Small to be in the movie.
During our conversation, Fred Furman was adamant that Marty Small, “did not use any strong arm tactics,” said Fred Furman.
