Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Statement About The New Jersey Attorney General Opening An Investigation

The Attorney General's Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Saturday, August 22, 2026, in the area of Route 50 and Third Street in Mays Landing, New Jersey. Two adults were fatally injured in the collision. Their identities are not being released at this time.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office and OPIA are investigating the circumstances of the incident, which occurred shortly before 8 a.m. The investigations are ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.
A 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a) (2), requires the Attorney General's Office to conduct investigations of a person's death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer's official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. It requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved, said the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
