You’ve heard expressions like, “Only in New Jersey.” This is one of those times. It’s literally a “Nutty” idea, with some calling it “NutCon 2026.”

High Taxes, Fees, Energy Costs & More, Yet …

New Jersey Democrat politicians were busy spending time debating the issue of creating an official state nut for New Jersey.

This is not a joke. It really happened. On the actual floor of the New Jersey General Assembly.

Democrats Want Hazelnuts To Be The Official State Nut of New Jersey

Some of their Republican colleagues are roasting the idea, on the actual floor of The New Jersey General Assembly.

Republican members took to the floor and made a joke of this nutty idea.

Assemblywoman Fantasia said the following:

If the rules are broken, fix the rules. Stop handing out VIP passes to the people who know where the back door is. By the time we finished reading it, we were  like, Oh, it's Paterson. Duh. Republicans want fewer barriers for everyone. Democrats keep creating carveouts for a select few, said Fantasia.

Did a near stand-up comedy routine, starting with, “I can’t believe we’re about to do this.”

Bergen called it a “moronic“ idea. The Democrat chair drew a distinction between Democrat members being “morons” versus the idea itself being “moronic.”

Statement From New Jersey GOP

Somewhere a taxpayer is working a second job to pay their property taxes while Trenton Democrats are holding NutCon 2026. After today's voting session, they're one step closer to getting their state nut, but had to endure a roasting by Assembly GOP members first. Has the hazelnut even earned this honor? What about the American chestnut? When push comes to shove, will Democrats stand with the nut? Have Democrats gone completely nutty? You think we're making this up. We're not, said New Jersey Assembly GOP.
