NJ is One Step Closer to Putting Traffic Cameras on School Buses

In an effort to keep kids that ride school buses safe, New Jersey is now one step closer to putting camera on buses to catch people who don't stop for the flashing red lights.

WPIX-TV reports the state assembly voted 30-1 to install outward-facing cameras on every school bus in the state. These cameras would take pictures of any vehicle that fails to stop for a school bus that is stopped with its flashing lights activated. The violator would receive a ticket in the mail, similar to how the state's red light camera system worked.

Fines for not stopping for a school bus would increase to $300 to $500 with five points being tacked-on to your license.

Money raised from violators would go to both schools and to private companies for running and installing the cameras.

The state assembly needs to act on the measure before Governor Christie can sign it into law or veto it.
