A retired K-9 from a South Jersey police department has died.

The Galloway Township Police Department says K-9 Colt passed away on Tuesday while surrounded by his family and handler, K-9 Sergeant Brent Lopez.

A Distinguished Career

According to the department, K-9 Colt joined their ranks in August 2016 when he was paired with then Ofc. Brent Lopez. The two began their journey as a K-9 team that fall, and in the following February, they both graduated from the John "Sonny" Burke Atlantic County K-9 Academy.

K-9 Colt had a banner career with the Galloway Township Police Department, locating numerous suspects, missing people, and a large quantity of narcotics. He also received numerous certifications from the United States Police K-9 Association.

Community Engagement and Legacy

The GTPD said K-9 Colt will be remembered most for his appearances at National Night Out and numerous other demonstrations throughout the community and local schools.

Galloway Township Police Chief Eric B. Hendrickson commented on Facebook, "K-9 Sergeant Lopez and K-9 Colt served as a top K-9 team all the way up to Colt's retirement."

K-9 Colt retired from duty in November of 2022 and lived comfortably at home with K-9 Sgt. Lopez and his family.

Colt was 10 1/2 years old.
