The Phillies were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Tuesday afternoon.  Catcher J.T. Realmuto was not part of the action that day, or the preceding two days, as he was experiencing some discomfort in his knee.  Today, the Phillies announced Realmuto's season is done and he will undergo surgery.

The Phillies likely will pursue a contract extension so the news is good.

Realmuto put together a very impressive first season as a Phillie.  Johnny Heller of Phillies Nation compiled how good Realmuto is:

The Phillies had this type of production in mind when they sent top prospect Sixto Sanchez to Miami.

It is possible Realmuto could have continued to play through the knee.  But since the Phillies were clearly eliminated even before the official elimination, it appears the sides decided to call it safe.  That will help both sides discuss an extension this offseason.
