Authorities in Atlantic City say they have arrested a registered sex offender from Newark who attempted to lure a 12-year-old girl into a backyard.

The scene unfolded around 5:30 this past Sunday afternoon in the first block of North Sovereign Avenue.

ACPD officers spoke with the girl’s parents who reported that their child was sitting outside when a man, later identified as 48-year-old Kasheen Marshall, rode past on a bicycle.

The man parked his bicycle and entered the backyard of the property where he attempted to conceal himself. He then used hand signals and whistles in an effort to get the attention of the girl to lure her towards the fenced in yard.

The girl ran inside to get her parents and Marshall fled.

Nearby surveillance footage from a resident aided police in determining a description of the suspect.

Officers located Marshall riding his bike at California and Pacific Avenues where he was arrested.

Police say Marshall was found to be a registered sex offender who failed to properly register as dictated by the court.

Marshall has been charged with the following:

  • Luring
  • Enticing a child
  • Criminal trespass
  • Failure to register as a sex offender.

He was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
