Seaside Heights Police Administer Heroin Antidote
Police in Seaside Heights are the first in New Jersey under a pilot program to save a life using an antidote to heroin.
Officers on Sunday responded to a motel and found a person with a weak pulse, apparently having overdosed.
Ocean County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Capt. Jack Sramaty tells the Asbury Park Press the officers administered Narcan and he began to breathe. The person was admitted to a hospital and a no charges were filed.
Narcan is the brand name for naloxone, which counteracts the effects of heroin and other opioid drugs.
Gov. Chris Christie signed a waiver allowing first responders to carry and administer the medication in emergency situations.
