Even though Memorial Day has passed, that doesn't mean we should stop honoring all veterans, past and present, for their service to our country.

Let's give a special shout out and salute to all the military veterans here in South Jersey. Thank you for your service.

That goes especially for James Purnell in Carney's Point, who celebrated a special birthday this past weekend, turning 97 years old. At a senior care center in Carney's Point, a large gathering of people showed up to celebrate Purnell's birthday and time for his service.

Close friends and relatives say he always makes everyone smile and laugh. They also call Purnell "Pop" for short.

Everyone went on to sing 'Happy Birthday' and wished him well, which moved Purnell to tears. And yes, cake was provided too.

Army veteran James Purnell was a Corporal in World War II and served in the 679th Ordinance Ammunition Company.

We thank you for your service and wish you a very happy birthday!
