Officials at Wharton State Forest and the New Jersey State Parks, Forests, and Historic Sites are hosting a fire tower climb at the Apple Pie Hill Fire Tower.
Up to 2.4 million trees would be cut down as part of a project to prevent major wildfires in a federally protected New Jersey forest heralded as a unique environmental treasure.
As of late Tuesday morning, officials say an active wildfire is burning in Wharton State Forest off of Maple Branch Road in the area of Tylertown and Batsto Village.
