With some districts faced with losing more than half of their previous state aid, legislators and Governor Murphy unveiled legislation to bridge the gap by over $100 million, for one year.

The state says local school districts have wide latitude over how to teach the new sex education standards but that ignoring them isn't an option.

Among the changes Murphy seeks are full insurance coverage for abortions, without any cost-sharing, and a “reproductive health access fund” that would cover costs for uninsured and underinsured women.

Sextortion occurs when someone with explicit images of a victim coerces them into providing more explicit photos or in-person sexual acts.

Though lawmakers have expressed interest in restoring aid to municipalities that is diverted to the state, that's not in Gov. Phil Murphy's budget plan.

“Gov. Murphy has taken so much from New Jerseyans since the start of the pandemic,” said Senate Minority Leader Steve Oroho. “He’s taken money, he’s taken power, and he’s taken rights, choices, and freedoms from every single New Jerseyan.”

Gov. Phil Murphy said at his inaugural Tuesday that his second-term goals include making New Jersey “the Opportunity State” and lowering property taxes by increasing state aid to schools.
